An Addendum by Patricia Sunderland: Witnessing and Speaking Charleston

  1. I think that there is a lot of emphasis placed on race. People want somewhere to put you in a box. They want to give you a label and race makes that easy. People are afraid of what they don’t know so if they have no place to put you it causes unease. I am glad that my children are racially ambiguous and people cant figure them out. My husband has been asked his race more than I can account for. So to make them uncomfortable he tells them he is Bin Laden’s brother. The looks on their faces is priceless. Be careful what you ask for, because you might just get it!
